Breastfeeding or Formula Feeding: Which works best for me and my baby?

Undoubtedly, every parent wants the best for their child; for expectant and new mothers, one of the most significant decisions they have to make is whether to breastfeed or formula feed.

Health experts and medical professional organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend breastfeeding as the healthiest choice for both mother and baby. According to Dr. Brian Lynch (2018), a Mayo Clinic pediatrician, “breastfeeding is strongly supported because of its known direct benefits to the infant’s nutrition, gastrointestinal function, host defense, and social-emotional development.” The method of breastfeeding is highly advised for mothers with their newborn's first six months of life then gradually continue to do so along with solid foods as the primary component of their diet.

Still thinking if Breastfeeding is an excellent choice? Well here are some of the reasons why breast milk is good for you and your baby:

According to Shaw’s “Breastfeeding vs. Formula Feeding” article in WebMD, breastfeeding benefits are:

  • It’s a digestion-friendly food that contains the right amount of nutrition. Breast milk's components, lactose, protein, and fat, are easily digested by a newborn and are sometimes referred to as the "ideal diet" for a human baby's digestive system.

  • It’s more affordable than formula. One may avoid spending money on costly formula and bottle-related equipment by utilizing one's breastmilk supply.

  • Nursing might be one of the mother and child's personal and intimate bonding moments as many nursing moms perceive breastfeeding as a fulfilling experience.

  • Beneficial for moms too, health complications and diseases such as breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and ovarian cancer are all less common in nursing mothers. Additionally, baby weight is loosened more rapidly, and postpartum depression is experienced less frequently.

Although breastfeeding is the recommended choice, it may not be possible for all women (and that is okay!). We get that you may fear not having a strong attachment with your child if you don’t breastfeed. But the reality is that devoted moms will always have a unique relationship with their children. And feeding, in whatever way, is an exceptional opportunity to deepen that connection.

In one of the WebMD articles entitled “Breastfeeding vs. Formula Feeding” article, formula feeding benefits include:

  • It’s convenient and flexible since instant baby formulas are available at various stores.

  • One can share the feeding responsibilities with a partner or family member. Mothers feel the additional support and assistance they need since anyone can now prepare and help feed the baby.

  • Feedings might be easy to plan. The formula takes longer to digest than breast milk, which means that a baby will feel fuller for longer, thus less feeding time.

  • Easier to track how much a baby is eating. Mothers can gain insight into how many times their babies eat per session daily, this helps monitor if their little ones receive the proper vitamins and minerals.

Several reasons might lead to consideration of formula feeding, including comfort level, lifestyle, and specific medical situations that make it difficult to breastfeed. Nonetheless, Infant formula is a healthy alternative for mothers unable to breastfeed or choose not to.

If you’re still undecided, it’s understandable to take your time! Remember that whatever your decision may be, it is the best option that works for you and your family. (Don’t stress it, mama!)
